The first three stops form an Avignon day. The remaining choices are distinct excursions with their own travel, entrance and booking arrangements. Visit lengths are FWP estimates, before transfers, parking and a full meal.
The main Avignon heritage visit
Palais des Papes
Explore the monumental papal residence and give its rooms and interpretation a substantial part of the day. Begin with the ticket format and entry time, then build your town walk around it.
Allow: 1½–2½ hours
Best for: History, architecture and first visits to Avignon
Plan for: The standard route has many stairs. An accompanied comfort route is available by advance reservation on specified dates; contact the operator before choosing a ticket.

A separate riverside monument
Pont Saint-Bénézet
Walk onto the surviving section of the celebrated Pont d’Avignon and view the Rhône from the monument. It is a paid attraction, separate from simply walking by the river.
Allow: 45–60 minutes
Best for: History, river views and a shorter cultural stop
Plan for: The bridge does not cross the river. Lift access is provided for visitors with reduced mobility; the operator asks visitors to confirm that the lift is working before arrival.

A food-led morning
Les Halles & the old town
Use Place Pie and the covered market as an anchor for a walk through central Avignon. Browse seasonal produce before lunch, then continue through the old town towards the palace or your chosen cultural visit.
Allow: 1½–2 hours for the market and a town walk
Best for: Food lovers and travellers who want everyday city life alongside monuments
Plan for: Les Halles is closed Mondays in the published calendar. The current Friday-to-Sunday closing time differs from Tuesday-to-Thursday; see the market table.

Villeneuve-lès-Avignon · monastic heritage
Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction
Explore the former Carthusian monastery and its sequence of cloisters and spaces. Pair it with a relaxed Villeneuve town walk, keeping the uphill fort as an optional separate visit.
Allow: 1½–2 hours
Best for: Architecture, contemplative heritage visits and a quieter excursion
Plan for: The operator’s practical and visit pages currently give different opening-day wording. Check the calendar for your date before travelling; ask about the appropriate access route.

A distinct uphill visit
Fort Saint-André & upper Villeneuve
Choose the fortified hilltop for its setting above Villeneuve and views across the surrounding landscape. The climb changes the effort level of a visit otherwise centred on the town and Chartreuse.
Allow: 1–1½ hours plus the approach
Best for: History, photography and travellers comfortable with a climb
Plan for: The tourist office describes a significant ascent to the fort. Steps and exposed upper areas make it different from a flat town stroll; confirm individual access with the monument.

A wine village north of Avignon
Châteauneuf-du-Pape village
Explore the village and its wine identity, then continue to an estate selected for the visit you want. A village tasting room and a guided cellar tour are different experiences.
Allow: 1–1½ hours for the village; more with a tasting
Best for: Wine lovers and a focused half-day excursion
Plan for: The upper village involves a climb. Estate entrances can be outside the centre; use the booking address and arrange a suitable return after tasting.

A booked estate experience
Château La Nerthe
The estate offers several historic-cellar visit and tasting formats. Choose the depth and duration you want, reserve a slot and give the appointment enough room in the day.
Allow: 1–2 hours depending on the reserved format
Best for: Wine-focused travellers wanting an organised estate visit
Plan for: Guided visits require booking and are not offered Sundays or public holidays. The operator cannot accept groups over ten until spring 2027 during works. Shop tastings have different conditions.

Roman heritage · a separate town outing
Théâtre Antique d’Orange
Make the Roman theatre the centre of an Orange visit, with time in the town before or afterwards. The monument’s scale rewards a focused visit instead of a brief photo stop between wineries.
Allow: 1½–2 hours, plus town time
Best for: Ancient history, architecture and a cultural contrast to Avignon
Plan for: Rehearsals and performances can alter visiting hours. Check the day’s programme, the route available for your mobility and any extra experience before buying tickets.
