Luberon

Villages, colour & a slower rhythm

Choose a few hilltop villages, a market morning and a landscape worth lingering in. The Luberon rewards a well-paced journey, with room for a long lunch between the views.

This guide focuses on the western and central Luberon: Gordes and Roussillon, the villages around Bonnieux and Ménerbes, Apt, and Lourmarin on the southern side. It is an editorial travel area, not an administrative boundary or a guide to every part of the natural park.

Why Visit Luberon?

Bonnieux hilltop village in the Luberon

Let the contrasts shape the journey

More than a collection of pretty villages

Roussillon brings ochre and pine-framed cliffs. Gordes brings pale stone and wide views. Bonnieux and Lacoste face the same valley from different heights; Lourmarin adds a southern village atmosphere and a Renaissance château.

Use those differences to choose your stops. A short village walk, a reserved heritage visit and an unhurried meal make a more satisfying day than a long list of arrivals and departures.

Stay on one side of the ridge for a short outing. With several days, add the other side and a nature visit without packing every afternoon.

Where to Go & What to See

Start with one main interest, then choose a nearby contrast. Suggested time on site is FWP advice and excludes travel, parking and meals unless stated.

Pale stone & a broad valley view

Gordes

Walk the historic centre around the château and look out across the valley. Choose Gordes for the architecture and village setting; keep Sénanque as a separate visit rather than assuming it is part of the same walk.

Allow: 1½–2½ hours for the village
Best for: First-time visitors, architecture and photography

Plan for: Sloping lanes, uneven paving and busy approaches. Tuesday market mornings need an earlier arrival.

Abbaye de Sénanque near Gordes

A separate heritage stop

Abbaye de Sénanque

Explore a working Cistercian abbey in a valley near Gordes. The guided visit is in French; the operator recommends the HistoPad option for non-French speakers.

Allow: Around 1 hour for the visit, plus arrival time
Best for: Heritage, architecture and a quieter cultural stop

Plan for: Reserve your chosen visit and check language and access arrangements. Respect worship, signs and planted fields; flowering is seasonal.

Golden ochre cliffs and pine trees on the Sentier des Ocres in Roussillon

Ochre village & landscape

Roussillon

Choose colourful lanes and the nearby Sentier des Ocres for a different palette from the stone villages. This overview complements the separate FWP local guide; allow time for both the village and trail.

Allow: 3–4 hours with a break
Best for: Photography, geology and families comfortable with steps

Plan for: The trail is a separate paid visit. Steps and sandy surfaces need suitable shoes; weather and fire restrictions may affect access.

Official visitor information ↗

Bonnieux hilltop village in the Luberon

A hilltop perspective

Bonnieux

Explore the rising village streets and views towards Lacoste. Make this your main village stop if you enjoy a climb rewarded by a broad view, with time for a meal nearby.

Allow: 1½–2 hours
Best for: Village walks, photography and leisurely dining

Plan for: Steep sections and steps in the upper village. The cedar forest requires a separate drive; it is not beside the cafés.

Official visitor information ↗

Stone lanes & artistic character

Lacoste

Walk the steep, stone-paved lanes beneath the château ruins. The appeal is the village fabric and valley outlook; a castle interior visit depends on the current visitor programme.

Allow: 1–1½ hours for a village walk
Best for: Architecture, art and a short pairing with Bonnieux

Plan for: Uneven, steep paving can be difficult with wheeled luggage, strollers or limited mobility. Check any paid castle visit separately.

Official visitor information ↗

An elevated village & vineyard views

Ménerbes

Follow the village along its rocky ridge above the Calavon plain. This is a good choice for an unhurried walk, a few architectural details and a pause overlooking the surrounding countryside.

Allow: 1½–2 hours
Best for: Couples, slow travel and village photography

Plan for: Some slopes and uneven paving; plan a shorter route where needed. Individual galleries and cultural venues keep their own hours.

Official visitor information ↗

Medieval lanes & a climb

Oppède-le-Vieux

Walk from the lower approach through the old village towards its historic upper section. Choose it for atmosphere and the relationship between stone buildings and the hillside.

Allow: 1½–2½ hours
Best for: Heritage and travellers happy with an uphill walk

Plan for: Use the paid visitor parking near the Jardins de Sainte-Cécile. The approach is on foot; allow extra time and avoid the hottest part of the day.

Official visitor information ↗

South of the ridge

Lourmarin

Combine the village lanes and cafés with a separate visit to the Château de Lourmarin. Friday is a useful market anchor for a day devoted to the southern side of the Luberon.

Allow: 2–3 hours; longer with the château and lunch
Best for: Food, village life and cultural stops

Plan for: Friday parking demand is high. Château admission is separate; check its seasonal hours and final admission before crossing over.

Official visitor information ↗

A market-town change of pace

Apt

Choose the old town on Saturday morning for its extensive street market. It offers a different rhythm from a hilltop village and works well as the main food-shopping stop of a stay.

Allow: 2–3 hours on market morning
Best for: Food lovers and a lived-in town atmosphere

Plan for: Expect busy streets and additional parking time on Saturday. Keep the rest of the morning flexible.

Food & local life

Make the market your morning

Choose one market, shop before a long lunch, and leave room in the day for finding parking and walking back with purchases. Do not try to combine two major market mornings.

Reservation recommended

Add a pigment workshop

At ôkhra in Roussillon, a booked workshop can give the ochre landscape a practical, creative dimension. Reserve the activity and language you want. Activities & booking ↗

Food & slow travel

Leave time for a proper table

Use a meal as the centre of a day around Bonnieux, Goult or Lourmarin. Reserve before deciding how many other stops will fit.

Where to Eat

Three different settings to build a meal into your route. These are restaurants for a seated meal; menus and service dates should be checked for your visit.

Bistro & Provençal cooking

Bacheto · Lourmarin

The restaurant at Le Moulin serves seasonal Provençal and Mediterranean cooking in a village setting. A natural choice for a southern Luberon day with time to sit down after exploring.

Reserve: Use the restaurant’s official booking link; confirm your date, meal service and indoor or outdoor seating.

Refined village dining

La Bartavelle · Goult

A small refined restaurant at 29 rue du Cheval Blanc. Choose it when the meal is the main stop of a Goult outing. The operator announces an exceptional closure through 5 October 2026, with reopening for dinner on 6 October.

Reserve: Call +33 4 90 72 33 72; confirm the current menu and service calendar.

Special-occasion dining

La Bastide · Bonnieux

Capelongue’s gastronomic restaurant focuses on contemporary cooking rooted in Provençal produce. Give the meal its own space in the itinerary rather than placing it between several short village stops.

Reserve: Reserve through Capelongue; check the current menu, dietary options and service duration.

When to Visit

April–June

Spring

A good fit for village walks and landscapes before the strongest heat. Pack for variable temperatures and rain; holiday weekends may still be busy.

July–August

Summer

Start outdoor visits early and keep a cool indoor option. Market mornings and popular villages need extra arrival time. Lavender flowering varies by site and year.

September–March

Fall & winter

Early fall often suits a slower itinerary. Later in the year, plan around shorter opening hours, restaurant holidays and fewer daylight hours rather than assuming every stop is open.

Before entering forests or natural sites, check current massif-access information ↗. Restrictions depend on the place and day; a village being open does not mean a nearby trail is open.

How Long to Spend

A first taste

One day

Choose a northern pairing such as Gordes and Roussillon, or a southern day around Lourmarin. Include lunch and leave out extra villages if the main visits take longer.

A balanced introduction

Three days

Give one day to Gordes and Roussillon, another to Bonnieux and Lacoste, and a third to Lourmarin or a market-led morning in Apt.

Room to explore

Four or five days

Add Ménerbes or Oppède-le-Vieux, a suitable forest walk, and time for a workshop or longer meal. Keep at least one afternoon flexible.

FWP planning recommendations. Allow separately for your arrival journey and accommodation transfers.

Getting There

Choose an arrival town, not a single point labelled “Luberon”. Gordes and Lourmarin serve different parts of the region.

Rail gateways & onward travel

Avignon TGV is useful for the western Luberon. Cavaillon and the Avignon area can also be considered for onward connections, but check your complete rail-and-bus journey for the date of travel. A car or prearranged driver simplifies a multi-village itinerary.

Getting Around & Parking

Between villages

Use a car or private driver for a flexible combination of villages. With buses, check the return journey first. ZOU! line 917 is now listed as Apt–Gordes–Maubec, with new timetables from 1 September 2026; older pages still mention Cavaillon. Line 909 connects Apt, Cadenet and Aix-en-Provence.

Current bus routes and timetables ↗

Within villages

Park in a signed visitor area and continue on foot. Narrow streets and pedestrian areas are part of the experience. With a driver, agree a lawful meeting point and pickup time in advance; do not assume access to the historic centre.

Village contrast

Half day: Bonnieux & Lacoste

Allow 4–5 hours overall once in the area, including parking, a short drive and a café stop. Keep both walks modest; add a long lunch only by extending the outing.

A first Luberon day

Full day: Gordes & Roussillon

Allow 7–8 hours within the region: 1½–2 hours in Gordes, a relaxed lunch, then Roussillon and the trail if open. Add arrival and return travel separately. Leave Sénanque for another day if you want an unhurried pace.

A flexible sequence

Three-day stay

Day 1: Gordes and Roussillon. Day 2: Bonnieux and Lacoste, with one reserved meal. Day 3: Lourmarin and its château, or Apt’s Saturday market followed by a quieter afternoon. Adjust the order to opening and market days.

Accessibility & Practical Advice

Choose the route individually

Lacoste, upper Bonnieux and Oppède-le-Vieux involve slopes or uneven paving. A shortened village visit can be very different from walking to the highest point. Ask the tourist office for an appropriate route rather than treating the whole region as equally accessible.

The cedar forest’s Chemin des Cèdres is a short designated accessible loop. That designation does not apply to every forest path, and access conditions should still be checked before departure.

Cedar forest route information ↗

Comfort, weather & families

Carry water and sun protection, wear grippy shoes and keep a shorter option for hot days. A stroller may suit some village streets but is awkward on steep calades and steps.

At Sénanque and paid attractions, confirm step-free access, toilets, language and admission arrangements for your party. For nature visits, check the daily restriction notice; choose a cultural or village alternative if access is closed.

FWP Insider Advice

  1. Use the market as an anchor.
Friday offers Bonnieux and Lourmarin, but choosing one usually makes a better morning than trying to shop at both.
  2. Book the least flexible part first.
A restaurant or abbey slot should determine the order of the day. A village walk is easier to move.
  3. Keep lavender expectations local.
Flowering is seasonal and varies with altitude, weather and harvest. Sénanque is worth a visit for its architecture beyond the flowering season.
  4. Choose a contrast, then stop adding.
One hilltop village, one landscape or heritage experience, and a meal often fill a rewarding day.

Luberon FAQ

How many days do you need in the Luberon?

Three or four days gives room for contrasting villages, a market and a nature or heritage visit. With one day, choose a coherent pairing rather than crossing the entire area.

Should I stay north or south of the ridge?

Choose the side closest to your main interests. Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux and Ménerbes suit a northern village-focused plan; Lourmarin suits a southern base. Check the actual location of your accommodation before estimating transfers.

Can I visit without a car?

Yes, with a timetable-led plan. Check current ZOU! routes, the stops you need and the last return. A flexible multi-village day is easier with a car or prearranged driver.

Can Gordes and Roussillon fit in one day?

Yes. Allow a full day with lunch and parking time, particularly if visiting the Ochre Trail. Avoid automatically adding Sénanque, Bonnieux and Lourmarin as well.

Which market should I choose?

Pick the one that fits your day and location: Gordes on Tuesday, Roussillon on Thursday, Bonnieux or Lourmarin on Friday, and Apt on Saturday. See the table for hours and seasonality.

Is the Luberon suitable for limited mobility?

It depends on the specific route. Many hilltop villages have slopes and uneven paving. The Chemin des Cèdres offers a different, designated accessible nature option; confirm current conditions and individual attraction access.

Can I see lavender all summer?

No. Flowering and harvest vary by place and year. Do not make a trip depend on a guaranteed purple field; the villages, abbey and landscapes remain the main reasons to visit.

What should I do if a forest is closed?

Respect the closure and switch to a village, a reserved cultural visit or a meal. Check each alternative’s opening rather than assuming another outdoor site nearby is unaffected.
